Khajeh Nasiruddin Toosi University of Technology
Khajeh Nasiruddin Toosi University of Technology, also referred to as K. N. University of Technology, is one of the oldest universities in Iran.
Who was Khajeh Nasiruddin Toosi?
Khajeh Nasiruddin Toosi after whom this university has been named was a 13th-century CE Iranian scientist, philosopher, astronomer, mathematician, and physician who has left behind many important works in these fields.
Following the invasion of Iran by Mongols, led by Halakukhan, in 1253 AD, Khajeh Nasiruddin gained a high position in their court because of his lofty scientific position. His activities played an important role in preventing war-mongering, killing, and plundering by the Mongols.
Khajeh Nasiruddin’s services in trigonometry, physics, and astronomy have made him renowned globally to such an extent that an asteroid and a 60 km volcanic crater in the southern hemisphere of the moon have been named after him. In Iran, too, the fifth day of the Iranian month of Esfand, coinciding with February 24, the birth date of Khajeh Nasiruddin, has been named as “Engineer’s Day”
The History of the K. N. University of Technology
In 1928, a faculty of telecommunications was established in Tehran, which is now the site of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the K. N. University of Technology. This faculty was the first cornerstone of one of the most important technical universities in Iran.
Shortly after the victory of the Islamic Revolution, i.e. in 1980, the K. N. University of Technology was officially established by merging 9 centers of higher education. In 1983, this educational center was named the “University of Technology and Engineering”, and was eventually renamed as the Khajeh Nasiruddin Toosi University of Technology in 1988.

Presently the K. N. University of Technology has the following 11 faculties:

- Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering
- Materials Science and Engineering
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Chemistry
Two scientific poles, 194 research and educational laboratories, 13 research centers, three research groups, six research institutes, 11 knowledge-based companies, and 28 growth center companies are also affiliated with this university and they are engaged in research in various specialized fields. These centers are located in different parts of Tehran.
One of the unique features of this university is its connection with different industries of Iran such that many important research projects have been implemented or are currently being implemented in collaboration with this university in various fields. Because of these collaborations, in some special fields of engineering, the specialists of this university are considered the most experienced engineering experts in Iran.
Presently, more than seven thousand students are pursuing their higher education in K. N. University of Technology and 350 full-time faculty members cater to the educational requirements of the students. Keeping in view the policies of the university, the postgraduate courses of the university have been further strengthened in the past few years such that more than 40% of its students are studying in postgraduate courses. The cooperation between this university and some universities in England, France, Holland, and Germany. and Russia has been effective in elevating the scientific level of its students.
The Position of the K. N. University of Technology in Global Rankings
In the Shanghai Ranking, the K. N. University of Technology has been ranked 301 to 400 in science and energy engineering and mechanical engineering and 201 to 300 in civil engineering. Similarly, according to the ISC Ranking, this university ranks between 501 and 600 in the world in the field of engineering and technology.
Foreign Students of the K. N. University of Technology
The admission of foreign students at the K. N. University of Technology has shown a growing trend in recent years such that the number of its foreign students has increased from 80 people in 2021 to more than 100 people in 2023. The policies of the university with regard to attracting foreign students and facilitating the pursuit of their higher education in Iran and the establishment of an international department and campus have led to the increasing interest of foreign students in this university, especially at postgraduate levels.
